I’ve talked to more than one Unsettling subscriber who has lamented the fact that Substack publications primarily rely on email. For many of us, our inboxes are giant slush piles of advertisements and announcements. Or, it’s where we go to do work, functioning more like a checklist. Neither of these help set the mood for longform reading.
If that’s how you’ve felt, some good news: You can now read Unsettling in the new Substack app for iPhone.
Here’s Substack’s auto-generated promo text on why you might like the app:
With the app, you’ll have a dedicated Inbox for my Substack and any others you subscribe to. New posts will never get lost in your email filters, or stuck in spam. Longer posts will never cut-off by your email app. Comments and rich media will all work seamlessly. Overall, it’s a big upgrade to the reading experience.
The Substack app is currently available for iOS. If you don’t have an Apple device, you can join the Android waitlist here.
Though I’d like to add that Android users can get some of the same experience now, without waiting, by using the browser reader already available at reader.substack.com/inbox. And obviously Apple users can also take advantage of this too (for those of you who responded to all of the above with, “ugh, another app?”)
My personal pitch for downloading the app, which I made sure to use before promoting it here: it’s a great way to declutter your inbox. The app allows you to opt into receiving all Substack posts via app only, rather than by email. If you want to receive them in both spaces you can, but myself, I’m happy to have my day’s reading set aside in a different place, without all the duplicate emails. For those of you who subscribe to many publications, this will likely come as a relief.
I was pretty happy to get the announcement about the app, and I hope that it makes it easier and more enjoyable for many of you to read the pieces here. If you have other thoughts or feedback on what would make it easier for you to read Unsettling, don’t hesitate to send it my way.
As always, thanks for being here!
More of our regular material will be on its way soon.
Until then,
Meg
